Two people were killed in a wildfire in southern California.
Two people were killed when a wildfire broke out Monday in Southern California southeast of Los Angeles, officials said. The flames spread to 2,000 acres and forced the evacuation of hundreds of houses.
Fire authorities in Riverside County, where the Fairview Fire was burning, revealed the civilian fatalities Monday evening. There were no other details provided.
The fire was located south of Hemet, a city of around 89,000 inhabitants.
The fire had grown to 2,000 acres and was only 5% controlled by 10:30 p.m., according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection/Riverside County Fire Department.
The fire began just after 2 p.m. and swiftly spread, according to fire Capt. Richard Cordova in a video briefing early Monday.
According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, there were 3,254 residences under evacuation orders as of Monday night.

A fast-growing wildfire blasted across the foothills east of Hemet on Monday, September 5, killing two people and injuring one.
As of 7:45 p.m., the Fairview fire was 700 acres and 5% controlled as it moved west toward Diamond Valley Lake. It had been mapped at 2,000 acres at 9:56 p.m., with no change in containment. Cal Fire/Riverside County reported that seven structures had been destroyed and numerous more had been damaged.
Residents south of Stetson Avenue, north of Cactus Valley Road, west of Fairview Avenue, and east of State Street have been ordered to evacuate. Because of the fire, Hemet Unified Schools will be closed on Tuesday, and the South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued a smoke advisory, advising residents to minimize their exposure to smoke and ash.

"There was a very significant column of smoke and a very well-established vegetation fire happening before (firefighters) even arrived," Cordova said, adding that the fire was aided by "strong east winds."
No other information was offered on the deaths, however one civilian sustained burns from the fire, according to Cordova, who also stated that no firemen were wounded.
